Yachting History at the Manila Yacht Club, Philippines
The Manila Yacht Club in Manila, Philippines is not your typical yacht club. It is actually one of the oldest yacht clubs in Asia and is steeped in history. It all started back in early 1927, when five yachtsmen came together to officially form the Manila Yacht Club. They wanted to put together the club to encourage and teach others about yachting, sportsmanship and the esprit de corps that goes hand in hand with the sport.

Although the yacht club has been in existence for over 80 years, there was a period of time during WWII (from 1941-1945) when the club was shut down and boats were confiscated by the Americans. The U.S. Army actually occupied the spot where the club currently stands until 1947, at which point the Manila Yacht Club was able to secure it.
In the 60′s members of the yacht club were so proficient at the sport they began to enter international sailing competitions. Yachting continued to gain popularity in the Philippines over the years. So much so that the first Asian participants in the Olympic yachting events actually came from the Philippines.
Today, most of the sailing that is done in the Philippines originates from the Manila Yacht Club. To many the club is actually a hub or “Mecca” for yachting. Membership is a cherish commodity. Members of this exclusive club are actually shareholders of the club as well. Membership/ownership is often passed down from generation to generation.
Needless to say, if you are going to the Philippines take some time to check out the Manila Yacht Club. Whether you are a sailor, a seasoned yachtsman or just like doing some boat watching, you won’t want to miss this historical destination.
