Waiting to Take Flight, The Brightly Colored Bird of Paradise Flower
The Bird of Paradise flower, sometimes referred to as the Crane flower, is a brightly colored flower which seems to resemble a bird’s beak and plumage. They are one of the most popular flowers when it comes to both commercial and residential landscaping. Not surprising since the bird of paradise is said to represent joyfulness and paradise itself.

The bird of paradise is native to South Africa, but can be found in many gardens and in landscapes around the world. It was originally said to be introduced to Europe back in 1773 and since then can be found all over the world. The bird of paradise flower is a member of the banana family and as such tends to grow best in tropical or humid areas.
The bird of paradise flower is grown commercially in California and Hawaii due to their warmer temperatures. Los Angeles, California even adopted the bird of paradise as the city’s official flower.
It is a welcome addition to most tropical-looking gardens in that it adds an exotic touch. One word of warning though, it is not recommended for smaller gardens as the bird of paradise has the ability to grow up to 20 feet tall.
On average the bird of paradise grows to around 2 meters (6 ft 6 in) tall and has strong, broad leaves up to 70 cm (28 in) long and 30 cm (12 in) wide. Just take a look at these beautiful, tropical flowers. They almost look like a brightly colored bird waiting to take flight.
