The Golden Gate Bridge itself is 1.7 miles long and spans the opening where San Francisco Bay meets the Pacific Ocean aka “The Golden Gate”. The bridge was completed back in 1937 and was intended to provide a faster, more direct route for people wanting to get across the bay.
It look approximately 4 years to complete construction on the bridge and believe it or not, it actually came in $1.3 million dollars under budget. At the time of completion, the Golden Gate Bridge was recognized as the world’s longest suspension bridge.
There were many who didn’t think building the bridge, or travel across it, would even be possible due to the location being known for high winds and thick fogs that regularly rolled in. Maybe it was that fear that brought about a safety net being placed under the bridge during construction. Nineteen men’s lives were saved thanks to that net and they became known as the “Halfway to Hell Club”.
As far as the color goes, even though the bridge may appear red at times, it is actually orange…International Orange to be exact. This color was chosen as it allowed the bridge to compliment the natural land surroundings while at the same time being a direct contrast to the sea and sky. It was also figured that the color would help with the visibility of the bridge during heavy fogs or at night.
