The Childhood Home of Anne of Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, Canada
Although L.M. Montgomery never lived there herself, the iconic Green Gables house and farm, down the road from her grandparents, became the setting for her renowned novel, “Anne of Green Gables“. The house originally belonged to cousins of her grandfather and today this childhood home of Anne of Green Gables in Cavendish on Prince Edward Island, Canada is a protected cultural landmark.

The well-known Green Gables house and farm originally gained their fame through the “Anne of Green Gables” novels and attracted further attention and popularity through TV and film. Although the author stated the novels were drawn more from her experiences and the surrounding areas where she had such fond memories growing up, people began flocking to Cavendish in search of Green Gables.
Because it became such a popular tourist attraction, Green Gables and the surrounding property became part of Prince Edward Island National Park. Today the Green Gables farmhouse is recognized as a National Historic Site and is kept up and protected as such. It is one of the most popular historic sites in Canada.
Of the 20 novels written by Montgomery, all but one were set on Prince Edward Island. So, for those looking to get further insight into the novels, a visit to Green Gables could provide exactly what they are looking for. Places such as “Lovers Lane”, “Haunted Woods” and “Balsam Hallow” can all be found on Prince Edward Island.
Additionally, until her passing in 1942, author L.M. Montgomery continued to visit and stay at Green Gables when she returned to Cavendish, Prince Edward Island. You too can experience the childhood home of Anne of Green Gables and get a feel for Anne, the girl Mark Twain once referred to as the “most lovable childhood heroine since the immortal Alice“.

oooh this took me back– I loved Anne of Green Gables as a little girl– ditto Pollyanna and Nancy Drew– they were my role models, and looking back, they weren’t such bad ones at all. Thanks for a sentimental journey
