The Beauty in the Widely Popular Origami Tsuru (Crane)
There are so many different shapes, designs and true works of art that can be made using Origami (the Japanese art of paper folding). However one of the most popular and widely recognized origami designs is that of the origami tsuru, most commonly known as the origami crane. It’s impressive to watch someone take a flat, square piece of paper and transform it into a beautiful crane with flapping wings, through just a few specific folding techniques.

One of the reasons the crane may be the most popular origami design is because in Japan the crane is viewed as a mystical, almost holy creature. There is even a story and tradition behind making 1000 paper cranes in order to grant someone a wish like a long, health life or a quick recovery from illness. It is also one of the easier origami animals to make, so anyone from a child to a full-grown adult can make them.
Of course origami can be very intricate as well. There are even people who have gone so far as to make detailed origami Star Wars characters and fighters. However, the basics are usually the same. You start out with a square piece of paper, Origami paper is preferred as it tends to hold a fold well. Other than that, the paper can be a solid color or have prints on it. Then you use very specific folding and sculpting techniques to create whatever piece of art you would like.
When making origami cranes, you can use the standard size paper, larger paper or if you are daring you can try for a miniature crane (about the size of your fingernail). To get you started on your origami crane-making adventure, we have included an instructional video below. For those of you who want to cover a few of the basics first and are interested in learning more about origami, here are a few more videos worth checking out.
