The Beauty Behind the Ancient Dragonfly
Dragonflies are stunning and beautiful insects. Despite what their name may lead you to believe, dragonflies are not related to the common fly. They belong to the Odonata order of insects and can be found in many countries around the world. They have elongated colorful bodies, transparent wings and large multifaceted eyes which allow them to see nearly 360 degrees around them.

The dragonfly is considered an “ancient” insect in that they have been in existence for over 300 million years. Apparently the dragonflies of today are quite similar to those in existence back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, although they are much smaller. The largest dinosaur fossil had a wingspan of approximately three feet.
Despite the fact they have six legs like most insects, they are not very adept at walking. Funny thing is, they are some of the fastest insects in the world. Records have dragonflies clocked at speeds of between 22-34 mph.
Dragonflies are most often found around lakes, streams, waterfalls, and other areas where water can be found. This is primarily attributed to the fact that is where they lay their eggs. Thankfully, dragonflies dine on other insects such as mosquitoes so many people consider them valuable insects to have around.
Now although dragonflies are beautiful, there are those who believe they represent evil. There is even a Romanian folk tale that says dragonflies used to be horses who turned into dragonflies as they were possessed by the devil.
Of course in some parts of the world dragonflies are used as food and in other parts they are used as medicine. And in Japan the dragonfly represents courage, happiness and strength. Needless to say, dragonflies are beautifully colored insects who obvious have secured their place in nature. Take a look and see for yourself.
