Take a Stroll Around Granville Island in Vancouver BC
Granville Island is not only one of Vancouver B.C.’s most enjoyable places to visit, but one of the most colorful ones as well. With well over 10 million people a year visiting Granville Island, this once abandoned old mud flat, is now a hot spot for tourists and locals alike. Back in the early 1900s, Granville Island or Mud Island (as it used to be called), was nothing but that….just a pile of mud. The island actually used to disappear in high tide.

That is until a local public official set his sights on filling it in and making it into usable land space. It wasn’t until 1913 that he was able to see his dream start to materialize, when the Pacific Dredging Company began work under the direction of the Harbour Commission.
The island was approximately 34 acres divided into around 80 lots, with each lot being an average 60 feet wide x 200 feet deep. The cost, at that time, to complete the entire island (including water, sewer and a rail line) was under $350,000.
In the 70s, Granville Island received a $19 million dollar complete makeover to bring it up to par and turn it into the tourist-friendly place it is today. From Granville Island Brewing, to the Model Train and Model Ship Museums, to the Water Park, to the Emily Carr Institute, to the ever popular Granville Island Public Market, there is no shortage of great things to see and do while on Granville Island.
So drive on over or take an aquabus (water taxi)…but be sure to visit Granville Island the next time you are in Vancouver, B.C.
