San Francisco Cable Cars, Hop on Board
When you arrive in San Francisco there are so many tremendous sights to see, but one thing you cannot miss is taking a ride on a classic San Francisco Cable Car (Trolley). There is just something magical about riding up and down the hills of San Francisco on a cable car.

And I have to say, even though Judy Garland’s “The Trolley Song” is from the movie Meet Me in St. Louis, I still start humming or singing along as soon as I see those San Francisco cable cars…
“Clang, clang, clang went the trolley
“Ding, ding, ding went the bell……”
The San Francisco Cable Cars have a somewhat rocky history. Although they were invented in San Francisco back in the 1873 and were the primary form of transportation around the city at the time, there have been numerous times where the cable cars were almost discontinued.
Luckily that never happened and today the San Francisco Cable Cars are one of the only moving National Historic Landmarks. Personally I cannot imagine San Francisco without them.
If you don’t live in San Francisco, one thing you may not be aware of is that there are actually two different types of cable cars. The larger cable cars run on the California Street line and can be operated from either end, thus removing the need for a turntable at the end of the line. The smaller cable cars run on the two Powell Street lines and are only able to be operated from one end. So if you happen to be at the end of the line, you might be able to catch a cable car riding the turntable.
The next time you are in San Francisco, hop on board!
