Raccoons, The Masked Bandits

Although many find them cute, it is for a good reason that raccoons have earned themselves the title of “masked bandit“. Don’t get taken in by that cute face, adorable bandit-like mask or fancy ringed tail. Raccoons are sneaky animals and if you don’t watch out, they may sneak up on you.

Raccoons are very versatile animals in that they can (and will) find food almost anywhere. Not only will you sometimes find a raccoon digging through your trash can for their next meal, but they are also known to feast on garden vegetables, fruit and more. They use their sharp claws and quick paws to scrounge for small animals and can even snag a fish right out of a stream in no time flat.

And don’t think that a simple jar, bin or even a door will keep a raccoon away from food. Their paws are very strong and they can be extremely determined. Raccoons have even been known to pick locks.

As to their bandit-like mask, it is believed that the mask helps not only to improve their vision at night but to reduce glare when they try to stay hidden from a predator. They are primarily nocturnal, but can be found hunting or wandering around during the day.

One word of advice….don’t make the mistake of trying to pet or feed a raccoon. They don’t take kindly to strangers.

Peacocks & Peafowls, Some of the Most Beautiful Birds

are truly . The colors in their feathers are a sight to see. However, even though the peahen (a female version of a peafowl) is beautiful in its own right, if you’ve ever seen a peacock strut his stuff, there is nothing quite like it. With his train of feathers outstretched he walks around like he owns the world. He dares the nearby peahens to not fall under his spell.

One of the most beautiful features on a peacock is the “eye” like shape found on the tip of the feathers. It is that part of the feather that seems to give it a little extra flair. And since peahens are believed to choose their mate based on the color, size and overall quality of a peacock’s train of feathers, the “eye” becomes a very important component .

There is one type of peacock who doesn’t have the colors you may have come to know and associate with peacocks. That is the white peacock. Native to India, this peacock has more of a classic look to it and despite its true lack of color, it has no problem attracting mates.

Peafowl are very close to their mates too. You will rarely find a peafowl on its own. They tend to either stay with one mate or in a group/harem of one peacock with multiple peahens as mates.

Another thing you may not be aware of about the peacock is that . They will often fly up into a tree at night in order to sleep. But if you don’t see any peafowl on the ground or in the air…you can always listen for their unmistakable cry.

Cloud Swing

For a child (and I’ll admit for me too sometimes), swinging on the swings can almost make you feel like you are flying.

You can get completely swept away by the wind blowing through your hair and the clouds seem to reach towards you as if they are inviting you to join them in the sky. And be honest…wouldn’t you jump at the chance to go swinging on a cloud?

Defying Gravity

A beautiful sunset, an empty pathway and a great bike. Sometimes the circumstances just happen to be right to defy gravity.
