Flying Excellence In Action, The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team Red Arrows
Officially formed back in 1965, the Royal Air Force Red Arrows quickly became tried and true ambassadors representing not only the Royal Air Force, but the entire United Kingdom. Originally there were acrobatic teams at most Flying Training Schools, but due to expense and a desire to form a real cracker-jack team, those teams were disbanded and one single team was formed: The Red Arrows.

Since we previously covered the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels and the Canadian Snowbirds, we would be remiss if we didn’t also cover the incredible aerial stunts performed by the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows.
The name “Red Arrows” was chosen to honor the skill and expertise of two earlier aerobatic teams: the Black Arrows and the Red Pelicans. While the team has traditionally had between seven and nine aircraft as part of their standard formation, it wasn’t until 1968 that the official team size became nine aircraft.
It was soon after that their signature “Diamond Nine” formation was registered as an official trade mark and rightfully so. It is their signature formation that has stunned audiences far and wide gaining them even further acclaim and recognition.
Many people consider the Red Arrows amongst the best of the best. In order to become a pilot for the Red Arrows, applicants must have completed at least 1-2 operational tours on fast jet, accumulated over 1500 flying and be “above average” when it comes to flying. There are usually ten times the number of applicants as there are spots on the team.
The aircraft flown by the Red Arrows is the BAE Hawk T1A. It was chosen to due its speed and maneuverability, making it perfect for the low altitude aerobatics performed by the Red Arrows. Just take a look at some of the incredible flying routines of the Royal Air Force Red Arrows.
