Facebook Profile Pictures: From Odd to Funny
Profile pictures are odd, as they have to sum you up in one single image. You can go for the plain mugshot portrait of course, and leave people to read what they will into the contours of your face, or you can be a bit more adventurous. But what do people read into them? Here are a few interesting profile pics and why they might work well as a profile picture.
Horseplay

Intriguing. I bet this guy’s colleagues are tiring of his gags, but he looks like the boss. Humouring him and taking photos is probably the least painful option. Wouldn’t want to wake up to see his head on the pillow.
Beat It

Endearing. Drums could be the only way to turn moody teens back into joyous five year olds.
Role Play?

A puzzle. Very hard to tell whether this is a very quiet fancy-dress party or whether he’s actually won a belt…
Top-Off Show Off

A bright red cabriolet on a sunny autumn day. There’s something a touch smug about a picture like this – both the car and living in a place where even in autumn you can still have the roof down. However, a picture like this leaves little doubt in your friends’ minds as to your socio-economic status, if that’s what you want!
All Going Swimmingly

What a likeable chap – willing to look a fool and get his shorts wet just to get this comedy shot. Top marks for effort, and sure to make you look twice.

A bit of mystery is always good in a profile picture; it pays to leave a few questions unanswered. Why is this cool-looking guy hanging out in a garden centre? Why does he look like he doesn’t know either?

It’s good not to try too hard. This girl is wearing an extremely unflattering helmet, but she’s OK with that. Kudos.
In Control

It’s always good to show yourself in a position of authority and control. This guy combines it with a slightly shifty expression, which gets you wondering what they’re up to… Who’s on that big expensive yacht in the background, and is this a boatload of snoopers or snipers?

Again, the element of mystery works well for this guy. He’s hiding behind a door next to a laptop, and the shadowy monochrome composition adds some drama to the scene. Sure, he looks a bit guilty about something, but you’d want to know more, right? Maybe he works for Microsoft.
Forever Young

Glorious. An elderly chap still playing with model planes makes us all feel like life is going to turn out just OK. The ‘got Java?’ motto on his shirt either indicates we should all carry on drinking lots of coffee, or that computer programmers are cooler than we thought.
Fancy a new camera to assist you with your profile pics? Sony are giving away the camera used for all the images in this article – the ultra-compact NEX-5 – in the Facebook competition Profile Hero. Five of the cameras can be won each week, and the overall winner of the competition wins a luxury trip for two to Rome. Plenty of opportunity for smug profile pics there!
The NEX-5 is ideal for people looking to upgrade from a compact digital, and features interchangeable lenses and advanced controls like those found on full-size DSLR cameras.
Head to http://apps.facebook.com/profilehero/ to compete.
