The Daffodil: A Beautiful Symbol of Friendship
The daffodil, also known as a narcissus, has become a symbol of true friendship. The flower itself has a beautiful trumpet-shape with a ring of petals beneath it that resemble a star shape pattern. Most daffodils are recognized as having some kind of yellow or golden yellow color to them, although daffodils can now be found in many different colors.

Besides the traditional golden-yellow color, daffodils and their hybrids can contain tangerine, pink, red, white, cream, apricot and orange colors as well. And although there are between 50-100 different species and hybrid varieties of the narcissus, they can still all be referred to as daffodils.
In gift giving, the daffodil symbolizes a rebirth or new beginning. It is also a symbol of friendship, chivalry and hope. The daffodil is the recognized flower to celebrate a ten year wedding anniversary, as well as the birth flower for the month of March.
In some countries, such as Germany, it is the traditional Easter flower. In Wales it is considered bad luck to give a single daffodil, one should always bring a bouquet.
Despite their beauty, in ancient Greece, the daffodil or narcissus was used to symbolize death. This was because it was believed the flower appeared to have a somewhat evil presence that could produce madness in people, even death.
And as the Greek myth goes, one day Narcissus (who was granted his good looks by the Gods and allowed to keep them and remain immortal so long as he never looked at his own reflection) became so completely consumed with his own reflection that he just couldn’t look away. He gazed and gazed at his own reflection in the lake until he eventually just disappeared. A narcissus, aka daffodil, grew in his place.
